When attending major art fairs like Frieze, everything quickly blends after visiting just two or three exhibition spaces due to the overwhelming number of galleries and displayed artworks. However, at Frieze Los Angeles this year, Gagosian made its exhibits deeply resonate in the minds of everyone passing by its booth. This was thanks to the mesmerizing recent paintings by Rick Lowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Rotation (Revolution)” (2023), a pretty large piece (3.66m x 8.23m), was the standout work in Gagosian’s exhibition space. It features geometric details that overlap and interlock with a subtle, cool color palette that captivates every visitor’s gaze. Sitting on a bench and admiring “Rotation,” one can quickly become immersed in the atmosphere it creates. The blend of black, green, and brown shades in rectangular shapes, along with warm and cool tones spreading across the artwork’s surface, gives viewers the impression that they are looking at a heat map superimposed on a city’s roadways, buildings, and plumbing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Rotation” is primarily inspired by photographs Lowe took of domino games while working on Project Row Houses in Houston’s Third Ward. In 1993, Lowe, along with six other Black artists\u2014James Bettison, Bert Long, Jr., Jesse Lott, Floyd Newsum, Bert Samples, and George Smith\u2014transformed a row of dilapidated houses into a public area that fostered creativity and supported local artists, young mothers, and small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The connection between the content of Project Row Houses and “Rotation (Revolution)” is clear. While a community can be very diverse, there is always a connection between many external and deeply internal elements. Like a galaxy of stars and planets surrounding the world, you don’t need to see the entire object to feel its presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
